James Baxter Chapman

Background: I graduated with an Integrated Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2024. In my undergraduate projects, I used Finite Element Models for both Civil Engineering and Healthcare applications.

Research Interests: I am interested in Scientific Computation with respect to solutions of differential equations, both with Numerical Methods and with Scientific Machine Learning. Uses and applications include Model and Design Optimisation, Biomaterial Modelling, Material Characterisation, Surrogate Modelling and Physics Informed Machine Learning.

Why I chose the CDT in Fluid Dynamics: I chose the CDT in Fluid Dynamics in order to fill in gaps left in my knowledge from my undergraduate degree in things like mathematics and experimental methods. I was also attracted by the support structure offered by the cohort approach given by the CDT, as well as the project variability and freedom.
