Facilities

Facilities available to undertake this research include:

  • The University's HPC system which, combined with the N8 regional facility that is hosted at Leeds, provides ~13000 computational cores, an extensive suite of licensed software and dedicated support staff.
  • Flow measurement techniques (including Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV), 3-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA), Ultrasonic Doppler Velocity Profiling (UDVP), Volumetric PIV and Acoustic Doppler velocimeter profiling (ADVP).
  • Techniques for measuring fluid concentration (Ultrasonic High Concentration Meter (UHCM) and Optical Backscatter Probes (OBS)) and a range of optical metrology systems (e.g. pulsed and continuous wave lasers).
  • There are also a number of larger facilities such as a class II aerobiology chamber, a data centre heat transfer laboratory, a selection of wind tunnels, and the national pilot scale advanced capture technology (PACT) facilities.
  • A range of brand new kit for measurement of flow and fluid concentration (for instance velocity profiles in liquids, visualisation and measurement of particles in suspension, and spray particle and droplet size distributions).
  • Read about the Experimental and Preclinical Imaging Centre (ePIC).
  • Read about the Advanced Imaging Centre (AIC).
  • MULTIform a brand new research facility based in the School of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Leeds specialising in experimental investigation and providing state of the art equipment for the study of multiphase flows in water/acidic systems and high temperature molten salt systems; at a scale that is representative of a real system.MULTIform consists of three components:
    • A pilot scale rig, based on water/acid [pressure (=<5atm), temperature (=<100oC)].
    • A pilot scale rig, based on molten chloride [pressure (=<5atm), temperature (=<550oC)],
    • A bank of high precision, state of art, instruments for measuring a wide range of fluid flow properties that can be employed in a water and/or a molten chloride system.

Both rigs can be reconfigured to include specialist instrumentation for fluid flow measurements and have the capability to include bespoke equipment for development.
